Many people do not need more technical vocabulary. They need a reliable mental model of what AI is doing, where it helps, and when its output needs scrutiny.
Mental models
One useful starting point is to think of a language model as a system that has learned patterns from very large amounts of information. It generates responses that fit those learned patterns. This can be remarkably useful, but it is not the same as a person checking facts against the world.
Limitations
The system can be fluent and wrong. It may miss context, reproduce bias, or provide an answer that sounds precise without reliable evidence. The more consequential the decision, the more important it is to verify the output.
Judgment
AI literacy helps people ask better questions, notice uncertainty, and decide when human expertise is necessary. That is why skills are part of transformation, not an optional training exercise after technology has already been chosen.
